Redemption is common in many world religions and all Abrahamic Religions, especially in Christianity and Islam. In Christianity redemption is synonymous with salvation. It can also refer to being forgiven from being evil. However from the Christian point of view if we died the man we were born as we would die sinners and therefore be condemned to eternal separation from God. Therefore true redemption only comes when we are given absolution for our sins. Not being returned to some previous state of existence.

The Codex includes the entire Latin Vulgate version of the Bible, except for the books of Acts and Revelation, which are from a pre-Vulgate version. Also included are Isidore of Seville's encyclopedia Etymologiae, Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews, Cosmas of Prague's Chronicle of Bohemia, various tractates (from history, etymology and physiology), a calendar with necrologium, a list of brothers in Podlažice monastery, magic formulae and other local records. The entire document is written in Latin.

According to legend the scribe was a monk who broke his monastic vows and was sentenced to be walled up alive. In order to forbear this harsh penalty he promised to create in one single night a book to glorify the monastery forever, including all human knowledge. Near midnight he became sure that he could not complete this task alone, so he sold his soul to the devil for help. The devil completed the manuscript and the monk added the devil's picture out of gratitude for his aid.

Despite this legend the codex was not forbidden by the Inquisition and was studied by many scholars.

Many aspects of the legend most probably originated in truth; however, due to the large portrait of Satan which would have been unique at the time, it is likely that the legend altered the truth so that the story could be retold in a more interesting way. Anyone from the time who looked at the book would most likely be drawn to the portrait of Satan, thus getting the impression that this was one of the book's focal points, explaining why people would believe that the monk made a pact with the devil. What many would have failed to see was that the page opposite this portrait was what is believed to be a picture of the kingdom of heaven. Now, many believe that double page spread was made to symbolize the fact that good and evil exist side-by-side, and nothing sinister.

What most likely happened is that the monk requested to produce the book in solitude, probably over a period of at least twenty to thirty years. Many monks would have used the copying of sacred texts as a method of purging their soul of evil, which could explain the monk’s motivation. The part of the legend that says that he was walled up alive as a punishment was probably a misinterpretation of his name, which is believed to be in Latin ‘Herman Inclusus’ or in English ‘Herman the Recluse’. This misinterpretation is understandable as the word ‘Inclusus’ could refer to either the punishment or voluntary solitude.

The Great 2012 Redemption is a fleeting moment we all will strive so hard to find.

In religion, salvation is the concept that God "saves" humanity from death, as part of His plan to provide for them an eternal life (cf. afterlife). As commonly conceived, God has both the will and the means to realize human salvation, albeit through means regarded as mysterious and transcendent of current human understanding. According to most religious beliefs, salvation is prescribed only for those judged worthy of everlasting life —a conditional concept with general variants ranging from universal salvation (ie. near-absolute salvation) to quite narrow and particular concepts that tend to assert a "one true path [to salvation]."

The purpose of salvation is debated (compare purpose of life), but in general most theologians agree that God devised and implemented His plan of salvation because He loves them regards human beings as His children. And because human existence on Earth is said to be "[given] to sin" (John 8:34), salvation also has connotations that deal with the liberation of human beings from sin, and therefore also the inevitable suffering associated with the punishment of sin (ie. "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).

The means of salvation are not well defined or understood. In common secular and scientific usage, "life" and "death" refer exclusively to the biological functions (or lack thereof) in an organism. The religious concept of both "life" and "death" are transcendent of biology —the human body may die, but the human being (ie. mind, soul, self-concept) can live eternally, or else be dead. The soul, typically described as "the essence of a [human] being," is thought to be transcendent and thus indicates a substantive link between human existence in a mortal human body, and eternal life as an angel. Whether the soul becomes an angel by nature, or requires an action by God is also not clearly defined in either scripture or commentary.

The theological study of salvation is called soteriology: it covers the means by which salvation is effected or achieved, and its results or effects. Salvation may also be called "deliverance", as in "being delivered" or saved, or "redemption," as in being redeemed or healed [of sin].
