2012 Apocalypse: Doomsday Deconstructed

It would be nice to think that something magical is going to happen, as I read about all the many possibilities that may bring the change or end of life as we know it there are a few things that I find very interesting.Here are some of the possibilities presented by the 2012 believers and the possibility they could occur in my opinion. Of coarse these are based on the information I currently have and may change as I learn more, the only thing I know beyond a doubt is that I know nothing beyond a doubt. There is very little known about the Mayans.

The Spanish, who were appalled by the human sacrifices performed by the Mayans, destroyed much of the Mayan historical texts. What we do know is they were able to predict the alignment of our sun with the center of the galaxy. Some say this alignment has already occurred and is a 36 year process. Even if the Mayans were off by 36 years it is amazing how close they came. There is no specific event mentioned by the Mayans that is going to happen in 2012, in fact there is no mention of end times at all that we know of.

Despite that fact there are many events, important events, the kind that will change the way we live coming up in the near future. Some of these are claimed to be the 'end event' marked by the end of the Mayan Calendar. Here are some of the most popular ones.

*-Leap in Consciousness. This is a theory that is based loosely on theories of quantum physics. While I find it possible that we could all be connected in a way by an energy or vibration I do not think this is something that will ever dictate, control, or effect our future it is simply a result of everything that exists sharing, a common origin. I think we will become more aware of this on a scientific level but it is likely to be as a result of another breakthrough in science

*-The end of money. This does not seem to be an event that is important enough to be considered a turning point in our existence. It seems almost inevitable that we will see the use of money become a thing of the past. Counterfeiters are making copies of our currency with more and more ease. We will have no real choice but to go to a system of some type of "credits".

*-Massive genetic mutations. There is no evidence for this to be credible. It seems to be a belief born of persons who read a few too many X-men comics along with wishful thinking.

*- First contact with aliens- Another unlikely event. It is hard to believe aliens are waiting for us to align with the center of the galaxy. It sounds like people are expecting the aliens to pop out of a cake and yell "surprise!" Like some kinda of intergalactic surprise birthday party.

*-Collision with a near earth object. While I find this to be an event we should be planning to deal with sometime in our future because it is very likely going to happen again sometime, I do not see it as being a 2012 event. The Mayans were not prophets, they did not have divine knowledge nor did they claim to. The calendars end is not referred to by them as the end of humanity.

*The appearance of planet X. Some think a distant previously unknown planet will appear on 2012. Again this has no factual basis for being true. Too much time watching The Twilight Zone and or Star Trek

* Massive Earthquakes and Volcanic eruptions. Again no reason to believe this will actually happen. People just tend to link such events to mystical or unknown forces. Sure there may be an eruption, earthquake, or tidal wave in 2012 but there is nothing to do with 2012 that is going to cause any of these types of events to occur.

*Magnetic pole shift- This is another event that is going to occur no matter where the planets or galaxy are. It has already begun. The changing of the poles however is not an event that happens suddenly. It is a process that takes place over a period of time and although the shifting of the poles may be a pain in the butt it is not going to be as dramatic as some say. The Earth will not be bombarded by radiation during the change anymore than it is everyday.

* Solar Activity. We know that solar flares will probably be the strongest since 1958.. But nothing occurred in 1958 that changed life as we know it, the only difference is our technology will be effected in some ways but nothing that is going to have a major effect on life, just the way we live it.

If I had to predict some of the possible events we will see occur around 2012 they would be the following-

* Technological Breakthrough. This is the one I consider to be most likely to occur around 2012. With our progress in computing advancing so fast it makes sense that we will progress in our abilities to control and understand our universe. Nanotechnology and computing power will make us able to achieve things and to go to places we never could have dreamed of. The sharing of knowledge will help us to understand each other and bring us closer. Our breakthroughs will occur faster and faster until we reach our next frontier.

Popular religion will be challenged by science like never before and our understanding that we were created not by a higher power but possibly by an equal and opposing power. Maybe this will support the circle of life beliefs held by some of the civilizations of the past who were aware of the cycles we see around us and realized that all that exists does so on a galactic scale and everything is connected. We have lacked the scientific data to prove it beyond a doubt but that I think we will see that change very soon.
